The casino was built in 1863 under the order of Prince Charles III of Monaco who believed the casino would boost the country’s economy. The Baroque style of the casino was delivered to it by Charles Garnier, who had been the architect behind the Paris Opera as well.
Over the years there have been many who entered the casino mere men and walked out millionaires. Here are some of the notable moments in the casino’s history.
Joseph Jagger, an engineer from Great Britain was the first man ever to be titled “the man who broke the Bank at Monte Carlo”. In 1873, the young engineer closely observed the roulette wheels and discovered a pattern in one of the wheels that made certain numbers come up more often than others. Jagger was able to win millions of francs before the casino could rectify this and find a way to beat Jagger.
The second man to take this title was Charles Wells, a con artist who had just arrived at Monte Carlo with money to spend at the roulette wheel. Wells was applying the risky martingale system where you double your bet to eliminate losses that are made when you lose. Wells got real lucky that night in 1891 and won a million francs.
Another name that’s associated with the Monte Carlo casino is Phil Ivey. A professional poker player, Phil participated in the 2004 Monte Carlo Millions contest, which was the casinos own poker tournament, and won up to $14,000 after getting through 80 competitors. However, he only came in third place when Jani Sointula took the top spot.
At the second Monte Carlo Millions contest in 2005, Phil Ivey won a million dollars and took his crown as the first place winner. He won another million dollars at the Monte Carlo Millions Invitational Event the very next day.
